Fosamax Lawsuits

A number of patients have filed Fosamax lawsuits against Merck & Co., the manufacturer of the bisphosphonate drug. These patients have alleged that Merck knew about the risks of Fosamax side effects, but failed to properly warn them about the potential dangers they faced from taking the drug.

Image Fosamax is part of a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates, which are prescribed to patients with osteoporosis, advanced cancer or Paget’s disease in order to prevent bone loss.

However, studies have linked Fosamax to a condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), which causes the death of jawbone tissue. ONJ can lead to severe pain and may eventually require the removal of the jawbone.

Merck's warning comes too late for many

Although Merck was told by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004 to issue a warning about the risk of jaw osteonecrosis for patients taking Fosamax, many patients who have filed Fosamax lawsuits say that they were not aware of the potential risk of Fosamax side effects when they started taking the drug.

Although researchers initially believed that only cancer patients could fall victim to Fosamax side effects, any patients taking bisphosphonate drugs could be at risk of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Lawsuits piling up

More than 100 of these patients have already filed Fosamax lawsuits against Merck. Many more patients have contacted Fosamax attorneys to learn more about filing a lawsuit or to learn if the symptoms they have experienced could be caused by Fosamax.
