A new study has provided the first evidence as to why users of Fosamax may be more likely to suffer a rare type of bone fracture than patients who do not use the drug. The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research study examined symptoms of a patient who was treated with Fosamax for eight years. |

The first lawsuit filed by a former user of the osteoporosis drug Fosamax is scheduled to begin trial this week. Merck & Co., the manufacturer of Fosamax, is facing about 900 lawsuits filed by patients who developed a condition causing the death of jawbone tissue after using the drug. Attorneys say that these lawsuits involve approximately 2,000 former patients who used Fosamax. |

Documents uncovered in a civil lawsuit in Australia have revealed that drug manufacturer Merck & Co. may have paid a leading medical publisher to print fake academic journals which favorably covered Fosamax and Vioxx. The lawsuits filed by plaintiffs against Merck are seeking compensation for prescription drug costs which they claim are too high. |

A drug expert with the Food and Drug Administration has warned doctors that prescribing Fosamax or other oral bisphosphonate drugs may increase the risk of esophageal cancer in some patients. Dr. Diane Wysowski warning about the side effects of Fosamax and similar drugs was published in a letter sent to the New England Journal of Medicine. |

A new study has found that Fosamax and another type of osteoporosis drug can significantly increase a patient’s risk of a serious and potentially fatal irregular heartbeat. The study, which was presented at a meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, found that patients taking Fosamax or Zometa were 68% more likely to suffer an irregular heartbeat resulting in hospitalization or death. |
